Chance the Rapper is still on his promo grind for his celebrated project, Coloring Book. On Monday (Aug. 15), the Chicago native appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to perform “Summer Friends.”

Backed by Francis and the Lights leader Francis Starlite on keyboards and Social Experiment member Peter Cottontale playing piano, Chance performed the solemn tune about losing friends to violence that happens every summer in Chicago.

Before his performance, Chance sat down with Robin Roberts to talks about his latest project, Coloring Book, and his scholastic endeavors with inner-city kids in Chicago. When asked about incorporating spirituality in his music, the 23-year-old rhymer believed in spreading the gospel in his rhymes.

"I think there’s a lot of taboos in hip-hop that people try and stay away from," he said. "I think a big one is: people are afraid to speak about God to a certain extent and I think if you’re not free to speak about God then you’re not free."

As for being an independent artist, Chance says that he is comfortable with making music on his own terms.

"I think the music industry is something that's very separate from music," he said. "So, by always staying on the music side of it, I've found success."
