Bun B’s ‘Trill O.G.’ Deemed a Classic by ‘The Source’

It’s been almost five years since ‘The Source’ magazine bestowed an artist’s new album with a prestigious five mic rating, but the dry spell is over. The publication has awarded Bun B‘s third solo album, ‘Trill O.G.’ with the coveted evaluation, deeming the LP an instant hip-hop classic in their upcoming ‘Back to School’ issue.

“Each album went through meticulous review from ‘The Source”s ‘Mind Squad’ across different categories that included originality, lyrical content, arrangement and production,” said the magazine in a press release. “‘Trill O.G.’ scored high enough to receive 5 mics, the holy grail of Hip-Hop ratings, granting it admission into an elite club of timeless musical compositions that span over 20 years.”

Already sparking debate on the Internet, the honor was last given to Lil’ Kim for her 2005 album, ‘The Naked Truth,’ which many claimed was an inside job and spoke to the business practices of former owners Ray Benzino and David Mays. The pair was subsequently fired in 2006, after the board of directors ousted them for “financial recklessness and negligence.” ‘The Source’ is now under new management, and continues to publish on a monthly basis.

‘Trill O.G.,’ which hit stores yesterday, is Bun’s third solo album in a trilogy of similarly titled releases. The album features guest appearances from T-Pain, Young Jeezy, Drake, Twista, Tupac and Pimp C, as well as production from J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Boi-1da, DJ Premier, Play-N-Skillz, Drumma Boy and more.
