The 2017 Brooklyn Afropunk Festival is upon us! Music lovers from far and wide are flocking to Commodore Barry Park in BK to check out some of the hottest acts in music. Afropunk is a celebration of Black musical and artistic eclecticism, and so much unbridled creativity is on display--both onstage and off!

There are so many legends taking the stage this year; from Raphael Saadiq to Macy Gray; as well as stars who have become generational voices--like Solange and Anderson.Paak. This year looks to be one for the ages.

We ran down the lineup for Day One (August 26) of this year's festival. Here are our favorite picks!

Thundercat is one of the most underappreciated musicians out there--and one of the best live performers. Dude will be one of the most talked-about acts at the festival. If you miss him at Afropunk, take heart--he's still out performing on tour, so he may be coming to your city soon.

  • Solange

Beyonce is the sun, and Solange is the moon. That may seem hyperbolic, but it's hard to deny the ethereal qualities of the super talented singer-songwriter. And she's an experience on stage. She's undeniably one of the highlights of Afropunk this year.

  • SZA

She's been out killing it on her CTRL Tour, and there aren't many artists having a better year than SZA. The tour and album have been a resounding success, and she's already given great performances at high profile events this summer like Black Girls Rock! and the 2017 BET Awards.

  • Macy Gray

She's been  a consistently dope live performer for almost 20 years now. Macy Gray can take the stage with her own critically-acclaimed tunes and/or a litany of covers, she gives it her all. The veteran soul singer is always a great show. Don't miss her!

  • Soul II Soul

They've been doing their thing for more than 30 years. The Brits have become a fixture on the festival circuit, and it's hard not to see why:  you won't be able to keep yourself from movin' and they pack enough of a musical punch to resonate deep throughout the crowd. One of the best live acts you will ever see.
