Beyoncé’s music video for “Formation” took home the Video of the Year Award at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. Bey took home a whopping six wins at this year's VMAs; breaking the record for most wins. She also took the stage to perform tracks from her acclaimed album Lemonade, delivering the night's most talked-about performance.

"I'd like to thank my beautiful daughter and my incredible husband for all of their support," Beyonce said during her acceptance speech, before thanking her creative team. "I'd like to thank [director] Melina [Matsoukas] for directing such an incredible video and pushing me. I'd like to thank the choreographers who worked so hard. I have the most incredible team, they work so tirelessly they stay up all night and i could not have done this without you guys."

"I dedicate this to the people of New Orleans," she added.

“Formation” was one of the most talked-about videos in recent memory after it premiered in February. The visuals paid homage to New Orleans, while acknowledging social ills ranging from Hurricane Katrina to the ongoing police violence against black citizens. "Stop shooting us" graffiti and Beyonce standing on top of a police car led to widespread criticism of the star. The song and video were further drawn into controversy after Beyonce performed the hit during halftime of the Super Bowl, flanked with dancers dressed in outfits evoking the imagery of the Black Panther Party.

“I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of the officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But let's be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things," she would say via statement.
