Best and Worst R&B Moments of 2013
R&B came for the top headlines this year — some news was outstanding while some was quite frankly embarrassing. From Miguel‘s poorly-timed leap to Chris Brown‘s never-ending legal problems, singers were in a heap of trouble this year.
With the new year right around the corner, we’re reminiscing on the good, the bad and the ugly from the past 12 months. Take a look at the Best and Worst R&B Moments of 2013.
Best: Justin Timberlake Makes Surprise Comeback
Justin Timberlake left his fans hanging for six whole years after the release of his 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' album. But just when we got tired of asking about new music, the singer finally announced his comeback in January. He kicked things off by dropping his Jay Z collaboration, 'Suit and Tie' and soon after, a release date for 'The 20/20 Experience' LP arrived. He teamed up once again with producer king Timbaland. To top it off, J.T. delivered hit performances at the Grammys, MTV VMAs and American Music Awards. And how can we forget the Legends of the Summer tour? Timberlake was back in action this year like he never left.
Best: Beyonce Releases Surprise Self-Titled Album
In the early morning hours on Dec. 13, Beyonce did what really only she could do -- she released her self-titled fifth studio album with no warning. The 14-track effort, available on iTunes, is a family affair with features from her hubby Jay Z and her daughter Blue Ivy. Drake and Frank Ocean are a few of the other big names who make guest appearances on the LP. What makes this release even more exciting is the 17 new music videos that came along with it. Clearly Bey won 2013 -- and perhaps the decade with this one-and-done stunt. This caps a great year for the singer, who also wowed the world at Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, bringing out Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams for old times' sake.
Best: Prince Releases New Music
There is something about Prince's mysterious ways that keeps us on our toes, waiting on his every move. Early this year, a new song from the Purple One, entitled 'Breakfast Can Wait,' surfaced on the Internet. As the year went on, we received a bit more from Prince in the form of magazine covers and more. His Grammy Awards appearance to announce the Record of the Year brought everyone to their feet -- plus he looked sharp in his all-black ensemble. And his show at SXSW in Austin, Texas, was also a welcomed surprise for fans who were lucky enough to make it inside the venue. The crooner, who once objected to the ways the internet controls music, attempted to get closer to his supporters and actually joined Twitter under the guise of the @3rdEyeGirl handle. There is still no official word of a world tour or another album, but we'll be watching closely to see what new tricks Prince has up his sleeve in 2014.
Worst: Miguel Injures a Fan at Billboard Music Awards
Miguel's two-step inducing love song 'Adorn' gained a whole new meaning when he performed it at the Billboard Music Awards in May. While singing a funked up version of the track, he jumped over a crowd of people in a pit near the stage and landed on a young woman's head -- she was removed from the area immediately following the incident. The epic fail of the jump didn't stop the show and Miguel did one more quick split before exiting the stage. At first, Khyati Shah, the victim, hugged it out with the 'Kaleidoscope Dream' creator after the show, but as of June, reports say she's taking legal action against him. Shah claims she has cognitive issues following the injury. Ouch.
Best: Erykah Badu Joins Kendrick Lamar at BET Awards
"Without further ado, I would like to introduce the beautiful and talented Erykah Badu," Kendrick Lamar said shocking everyone as the soul queen paraded to the front of the stage at the BET Awards. She joined the Compton MC for a live rendition of his hit song 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe.' Badu put some funk in the hook, while a saxophone jazzed things up in the background. Before the performance ended, the two entertainers held each other's hands as they walked a few feet to sit down on a building stoop set up onstage. It's clear that Erykah's Baduizm got to Lamar too.
Worst: TGT Puts On Awkward TV Performance
Tyrese, Ginuwine, and Tank weren't portraying themselves much like 'Three Kings' on WLNY's 'The Couch' in July. Between Ginuwine's ever-changing facial expressions, twitching and struggling to stay in harmony during their performance, many questioned what exactly was wrong with the singer. Things only got more awkward as Tyrese and Tank yelled over each other as they sang. Ginuwine didn't sound so bad when he finally came in on his solo part, but that didn't stop the video from making headlines soon after. No one knows for sure what happened, but the members of TGT have been around a little too long to allow these awkward displays of their talents to go down.
Worst: Rihanna and Teyana Taylor Go to War on Twitter
So many singers were serving up R&Beef in 2013. Rihanna and Teyana Taylor brought their rift to front street earlier this year, hitting each other below the belt in a nasty Twitter war. It all started when Rihanna posted an Instagram video of a man, who wore a baseball cap and long curly wig, singing ‘Caught Up in the Rapture.’ This moment was similar to a video Teyana posted of herself covering the same song. “I hate broke bitches,” Bad Girl Rih wrote. Teyana then threw a direct Twitter punch by calling Rihanna “industry p----.” The tweet battle lasted for a few hours with both singers even posting horribly photoshopped images of the other on their personal accounts. There is no word yet on whether these former friends have kissed and made up. We think not.
Best: Ciara Gets Engaged to Future
Ciara and her man Future's relationship is now set in stone. The two ATLiens got engaged in October and CiCi has been seen all around town beaming with the big rock her rapper boo placed on her ring finger. The musical couple started to show signs of getting serious when Future lent his vocals on the songbird's hit song 'Body Party' and made a cameo in the music video. “This it... I don’t get into nothing to get out," Future said in an interview on Hot 97's 'The Angie Martinez Show' in August. "We haven’t set a date, this the one. I said it seven years ago, so for it to come around and happen it was meant to be." How cute. We wish them the best.
Worst: Chris Brown Involved in More Legal Battles
Chris Brown started the year off all wrong when news broke that he was involved in a recording studio brawl with Frank Ocean in January. His relationship drama also continued to unfold as he and Rihanna reconciled and made their love public again, only to break up shortly after. It appeared he was back on his A-game as he promoted the upcoming release of his new album 'X,' and the summer song 'Fine China' -- the album has now been delayed until further notice. But in October, he was arrested in Washington D.C., on felony assault charges. He entered rehab for anger management on his own accord, but was reportedly kicked out after smashing his mother's car window during a family session. C.B. was ordered back to rehab for 90 days shortly after. If he sticks it out, he'll remain there until February 2014.
Best: 'CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story' Is a Hit
In October, TLC's biopic 'CrazySexyCool' debuted on VH1 and logged 4.5 million viewers. It was also a big hit on Twitter, with fans and critics joining the conversation, sharing memes and reactions to the film as it aired. The movie brought to light early struggles within one of the biggest girl groups of all-time. Some of the most tweetable moments were the attack on the group's former manager, '80s singer Pebbles; memories tied to their hit songs like 'Creep' and 'Scrubs'; and the sentimental scenes leading up to the death of group member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez. At the end of the movie, Chili and T-Boz premiered a new song, 'Meant to Be,' that they recorded with the help of Ne-Yo. Although we could've easily shed a couple of tears at this conclusion, the overall production brought us back to the good old days when TLC ran R&B.
