Beastie Boys/’Battlestar Galactica’ Mash-Up Is the Nerdiest Thing Ever
Katie King won over the Internet this week with her insanely precise side-by-side mash-up of the Beastie Boys' classic clip for 'Sabotage' and scenes from sci-fi goldmine 'Battlestar Galactica.' This isn't some mildly funny YouTube botch job, either. King's editing prowess and ability to recreate the Beasties' iconic imagery out of her knowledge of the popular TV show is pretty much astounding, and can be seen after the jump.
"The first shot I imagined and the first I went looking for were of [Commander] Adama's iconic and short-lived mustache," she explained to Wired.com in an e-mail interview. "The rest fell into place from there."
"Fell into place" might be downplaying the amount of work and luck to create a clip like this. King says that she only worked on it for a couple hours per night for a week, but was really surprised at how perfectly some of the side-by-side shots worked out based on her intuition. King is an art director for an ABC television affiliate in Virginia, so this isn't exactly coming out of nowhere.
"It was one of those times where you hear a song a hundred times and on the hundred and first, a light bulb turns on," she continued. "I had hoped it would be 100 percent shot-for-shot, but about halfway through, I had to start improvising. Each time I would take a clip, lay it down and set the timing, I would just start grinning like a maniac. I think I wore out the springs in my office chair jumping up and down a few times when a shot worked really well."
