Alicia Keys honored her mentor Clive Davis at her 13th annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball event in New York on Wednesday night (Oct. 19). The ‘80s theme event was streamed exclusively for fans on Tidal and featured performances from artists of the past and present.

Iconic female rap group Salt-N-Pepa and rocker Patti Smith were on hand to transport attendees back into the ‘80s with their performances. Keys called Salt and Pepa “the dopest female rappers," according to Billboard. Rock icon Patti Smith also performed.

Of course, the highlight of the night was Keys’ performance. The R&B piano diva invited her “sibling” A$AP Rocky to perform their duet “Blended Family.” Fellow rhymer Chance the Rapper also rocked the mic, performing tunes from his celebrated album, Coloring Book. The 35-year-old singer also delivered stirring rendition of “Fallin’” and a new song “Holy War” from her upcoming new album, Here.

Keys also dedicated her 2007 hit “No One,” to her mentor Clive Davis, the evening’s honoree. The veteran music mogul was saluted for inspiring countless of artists over the years including the late Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin as well as Keys. He was also honored for his humanitarian work with Keys’ Keep a Child Alive foundation.

“Alicia, I think you’re beautiful, I think you’re perfect," said Davis during his acceptance speech. "I know how hard it gets, but I swear it’s worth it.”

“Clive Davis for president!” Keys joked.

Overall, the event was a huge success for Alicia Keys and her Keep a Child Alive initiative. “There’s a spirit in here,” Keys told her guests during the event.

A spirit of hope and altruism.
