Akon Clears Up Rumors About His Criminal Past

After an alleged outing from the Smoking Gun, singer Akon is setting the record straight regarding rumors that he lied about the time he spent in jail. The singer/producer has been heavy on the media circuit promoting his new album and is finally clearing up the allegations.

"I got caught up in cars and this and that. Kept going in and out of jail. Three months here, six months there, two weeks here." he said in an interview. He went on to say that previous statements he made about spending three years in jail were a culmination of time spent, not one sentence.

Akon called his time in prison "a life changing experience" and dismissed the story that he was in jail for being a ringleader of a car theft ring. "The majority of the time I was in jail was for theft by receiving. I was always receiving stolen cars." He said.

His third album 'Freedom' is in stores now.
