When hip-hop comes to mind, the rapper that epitomizes its sound and look is Jay-Z. When music industry veteran Steve Stoute wrote his new book, 'The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy,' the Brooklyn MC was surely an example he thought to reference from the start. Stoute called on Hov to serve as the subject of HuffPost Black Voices' ongoing video series, 'The Tanning Effect,' which supports the vision of his current book.

During their sit-down, Stoute and the 'Watch the Throne' creator discuss the evolution of hip-hop, including the rapper's famed Glastonbury performance, as well as how he changed the way rap fans dressed, moving from oversized NBA jerseys to tailored button down shirts. "I'm always trying to move forward and try to move to the next thing," the father-to-be shares.
