Mary J. Blige has platinum plaques, number one hits and enough awards to fill a few trophy cases, but her next pursuit might be her most challenging yet. During her performance on 'Good Day America,' the 39-year-old Bronx native shared her recent good news with the crowd about bettering her education.

"As you know I never got a chance to finish high school but they gave me my honorary degree the other day," Blige told the audience of recently receiving her GED from Roosevelt High, located in Yonkers, New York. "And I've been accepted into Howard University, the class of 2014!"

Though the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul hasn't announced whether or not she plans on attending the University, she has consistently shared her regret in dropping out of school throughout her career. As a student at Lincoln High School, which specialized in the performing arts, Blige studied music and performed during talent shows, but dropped out of high school in eleventh grade. "If I had the sense that I have now back then, I would be in college by now," she told JET magazine back in 1999. Instead, she held down a few jobs on the side, eventually recording her demo tape at the age of 17 and signing her first recording contract with Uptown Records to release her debut album 'What's the 411?' in 1992.

Dropping out of high school may be one of her biggest mistakes, but Blige has gone on to become one of the most heralded stars of music. Not only has she released eight multi-platinum albums, but she has also received nine Grammy Awards, receiving the honor of being one of the 100 greatest singers of all-time by Rolling Stone.

Blige's ninth album, 'Stronger With Each Tear,' was released in December 2009. The album has spawned the singles 'The One' featuring Drake, 'I Am' and 'Each Tear,' charting at No. 2 in its first week with sales of 332,000 copies. Certified gold earlier this year, the effort has sold more than 750,000 copies to date.
