Everyone has an addiction, whether it be fast cars, music, money or fame. But sometimes the addictions are more detrimental to the body like drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, they get the best of some of our favorite artists at times.

To fill you in on just how serious an issue it is, let's face the facts. More than 23 million Americans aged 12 or older -- or 9.2 percent of the population -- have used an illicit drug or abused a psychotherapeutic medication (such as a pain reliever, stimulant or tranquilizer) in the past month, according to the most recent 2012 data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Alcohol abuse is just as prevalent in 17.6 million people, or one in every 12 adults.

We’ve lost some great artists such as Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson, to name a few, due to addiction. Hopefully, we won't have to bid farewell to any more entertainers before they've been able to bless the world with their talents.

While some superstars are able to overcome addiction and clean up their acts quietly and swiftly, it takes others years of struggling with drug or alcohol abuse and “rock bottom” career-threatening moments including arrests, near-death experiences or worse to admit that help is needed.
