Pharrell Williams is a trailblazer in the recording studio, but he's also a pioneer when it comes to his fashion sense. On numerous occasions, the rapper, songwriter and producer has gained major attention on the red carpet for his unique style choices. As a result, the Council of Fashion Designers of America have named him the recipient of the 2015 Fashion Icon Award.

From his infamous Arby's-meets-Smokey-the-Bear hat at the 2014 Grammys to his conscious decision to wear cuffed shorts to as many red carpet events as possible -- no matter how formal they are -- Pharrell has always taken a risky approach to his wardrobe selections. One day the singer will rock an insanely long, bright pink blazer and the next, he'll be head to toe in camouflage. He also has no qualms about accessorizing and we're not just talking about his hat collection. Pharrell experiments with jewelry and eyewear, which makes his 2013 collaboration with Moncler a great match.

Diane von Furstenberg, designer and president of the CFDA, put it best when she said, “If cool was a person, it would be Pharrell, not just for his looks and sense of style but for his kindness and openness. I cannot imagine anyone not seduced by him.”

After a look through the "Come Get It Bae" artist's previous red carpet appearances and performances, it's clear why he's a fashion icon. You might not necessarily wear one of Pharrell's ensembles or even agree with what he decides to step out in at a particular event, but the point is he chose it, wore it with confidence and for that, he deserves the honor.

The lauded entertainer will officially be given the CFDA award on June 1 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City, but in the meantime, check out 10 Looks That Prove Pharrell Williams Is a Fashion Icon here.
